Hair Growth & Styling Tips for Short Hair After Chemo

Post-Chemo hair growth and styling can be a nightmare to navigate. The number one thought on most women’s minds during and after chemo is how and when will my hair grow back. Then, when the time does come, the hair texture and color may be unfamiliar causing a host of new challenges.

Having the tools and the knowledge to navigate short hair after chemo will make a world of difference. Also, it will help you feel more confident at each stage of your growth.  So, let’s jump right in. I'll share all of my hair “secrets” with you about how to grow & style short hair after chemo.

How to Grow Your Short Hair After Chemo

HOW TO GROW YOUR SHORT HAIR AFTER CHEMO

I am not a doctor or a hair expert. So, I can only share from my own experience. Also, anecdotes from hundred of survivors I have talked to but here is what worked for us. Always check with your oncologist first before taking any vitamins or supplements. This is to ensure there are no contraindications for your medications.

The day chemo was over, I threw the love of my bald head to the wind and put all my energy into regrowing my hair. After many nights of research, I settled on Biotin as my first plan of attack. I started taking the Biotin supplements the day my chemo ended (with my doctor's approval)/ I was so amazed by the results. My hair grew like weeds and within 1 month my hair looks like the photo below.

WHEN DOES HAIR GROW BACK AFTER CHEMO?

Keep in mind that your chemo regimen and your genetics will determine how fast your hair grows. I know it’s hard. But, don’t panic if your chemo buddy is rocking a full head of hair and your baby hairs are just sprouting.

Though I was thrilled to have hair on my head again, I was not so thrilled about the hair that quickly sprouted EVERYWHERE else. Legs, face and nether regions - look out! Due to the huge influx of hair growth and hormonal acne tied to my hormone blocking meds (and potentially the Biotin). I decided to switch to these hair gummies, which worked great. No breakouts or excessive body hair and the hair on my bed kept growing at a good pace.

SHORT HAIR INSPIRATION

For many of us, hair regrowth after chemo will be the first time we have ever experienced short hair. Just like with anything new, it helps to have education and “training” and inspiration!

Pull out a magazine, save images from social media and browse Pinterest (follow my 'hair' board). Use hashtags such as #chemohair #chemocurls #hairgrowth to find other women re-growing their hair.

If you can find someone a few months ahead of you with similar hair texture, their progress can serve as your monthly inspiration.  Whenever you find short hair styles you like, save the images in an album.

This will give you fun looks to try as your hair gets longer and make it feel more fun rather than a pain (though it definitely can be). I tried to treat each length as if I had a new haircut and was learning to restyle it.

Pixies, bobs, and buzz cuts - the internet has tons of style ideas. So, I hope you leave this post feeling inspired by my photos as well.

Some of my hair inspo pages during my regrowth were: Sarah Lou Who, Short Hair Life, Nothing But Pixies & Chloe Brown

POST CHEMO HAIR TEXTURE

One of the most talked about aspects of hair regrowth after chemo is texture. For many women, hair after chemo can come back with a different texture than before. It can be shocking if you’re not prepared for it.  Many times, hair will come back a new color and thicker/thinner than you were used to. In my case my hair came back lighter and thicker.

WHAT ABOUT CHEMO CURLS?

Chemotherapy kills rapidly dividing cells like hair, which explains why hair follicles are the first to go. When chemotherapy is complete, remnants of the drugs may remain impacting the regrowing hair cells.

These altered follicles may appear curly and more coarse. As the hair gets longer, the tight curls may fade to waves, while for others the curls may stick around for the long term. In my experience, my chemo curls appeared at around 6 months and then faded at about 10 months.

WHEN CAN I COLOR MY HAIR AFTER CHEMO?

Chemotherapy kills rapidly dividing cells like hair, which explains why hair follicles are the first to go. When chemotherapy is complete, remnants of the drugs may remain impacting the regrowing hair cells.

These altered follicles may appear curly and more coarse. As the hair gets longer, the tight curls may fade to waves, while for others the curls may stick around for the long term. In my experience, my chemo curls appeared at around 6 months and then faded at about 10 months.

Sometimes the pigment of hair can be changed when it returns after cancer. Doctors are not exactly sure why this happens. But it is most likely linked to the chemo drugs and their remaining effects.

For some people their hair comes back light, more grey or a whole new color completely. You may love this change or you may want to do something about it.

So when can you start dying your hair? During the first 4-6 months, your hair will be brand new baby follicles that need to be cared for gently. Try not to dye your hair during that time period. Give your new hair a chance to strengthen.

When you reach the 5 months mark, it’s OK to consult with your hairstylist about colouring your hair. Also, preferably with a non-ammonia colour such as Loreal INOA. Try to stay away from strong lighteners until at least 8 months.

I started coloring my at 5 months post chemo. Slowly went to ash blonde over time to ensure we protected my hair.

POST-CHEMO HAIR STYLING TIPS & TOOLS

So, now that you have some inspiration and your hair is starting to grow, how do you style it? Experimentation and finding the right products are the keys to success. Knowing what products and styling tools to add to your arsenal at each stage will help you adapt to the changing texture/length and feel more confident about your ever changing 'do.

TIPS & TOOLS |0-3 MONTHS

During the first few months there is not much that you can do in terms of styling, but I do have a few tips for you. The sides and nape of your neck will grow much faster than the top/front of your head, so you may want to head to your salon to shape up the edges. It may be terrifying to get a trim when you’re aiming for growth, but it will allow you to have a clean sculpted look as you wait for the top to fill in.

As your hair gets a little longer, you can also experiment with a good wax to help tame crazy hairs and slick down the sides. A little shine spray can really help if your hair is coming in coarse and dull.

Post-Chemo Hair Styling & Growth Tips

TIPS & TOOLS | 4-6 MONTHS

At around 4 months you can begin to force a side part with a comb and strong hold pomade. This hair brush is super soft and will help you smooth your short hairs and set the Fauxwax in place.

If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can also experiment with an undercut or a buzz design while you wait for the top to catch up. Using headbands and strong brows at this stage can really help balance your face and add a feminine touch.

FAUX HAWK

The faux hawk is another great style to try around the 5 month mark. You will have just enough hair to smooth to the middle, and this will disguise the lack of length on the front of your head.

FAUX HAWK

TIPS & TOOLS | 6-8 MONTHS

By about 6 months you will have more of a pixie look, which gives you more styling options. Investing in mini straightener and curl cream will allow

you to tame the curls for a curly or straight look. Hair oil is also great for smoothing the frizz that comes with chemo curls. Don’t try to brush your hair at this

stage unless you want to end up with a big poof. Instead use a wide tooth comb to detangle and gentle massage hair products into your hair with your hands.

TOUSLED SHORT HAIR

Post-Chemo Hair Growth Timeline (8 - 6.Post-Chemo Hair Growth Timeline #8 (6.5 Mos.)5 Mos.)

This time period will also lend itself well to the ‘tousled look’. Experiment with dry shampoo and texture spray to create definition and movement with your hair. Hair feeling flat? Try a volumizing spray. This one is my favorite.

You may find that you need hydrating products at this stage to combat the dryness that comes with curly hair. The hydrating shampoo and conditioner from Pureology were lifesaving products for me and I know others who have raved about Maui Moisture line. I now use this shampoo and the blonde color line from this brand.

TIPS & TOOLS | 8-12 MONTHS

As the top of your hair finally begins to catch up in length, you will have more styling options. While you will want to continue to have your hair stylist trim the nape of your neck and ears, start to feather the ear area instead of a blunt cut to allow your ‘fringe’ to develop.

This is the stage where I really started experimenting more with my hair. I used my mini straightener to create more defined curls, slept in foam rollers for a more retro look and even tried a daring curly faux hawk look. Check out the full tutorials linked in the sidebar.

Post-Chemo Growth & Styling Tips

TIPS & TOOLS | 1 YEAR & BEYOND

Once you get to the bob stage (usually around 1 year), you can finally fully straighten your hair (with a 1/2″ straightener), curl it, and even try a fun braided updo. I chose to continue my trims throughout this period to avoid the mullet look. Some people choose to push through the mullet look in order to achieve a little more length quicker. It’s completely up to you as to which route you choose.

I’m not going to lie, it’s challenging to adjust to the ever-changing length, but I always try to remind myself that each stage passes. Even at 2 years post chemo there are weeks when I can’t stand my hair and wish it was longer (or shorter haha). I have to constantly search for new inspiration, try new styles and experiment with new products.  With the right tools, products and accessories, and an open mind I have learned that you can successfully achieve a stylish look at every stage of your chemo hair regrowth. Thank you so much for sharing this with us all. I love every style you have worn. You are beautiful. My last chemo treatment for BC dec 2017. My hair took 4 months to begin growing. It is now 18 months post chemo and the top half of my hair is still much thinner. Back and sides are thick. It is gut wrenching and really struggle with this . My natural hair was long and I had lots of it. I’m hoping and praying it will thicken. I used hair growth serum. Maybe it helped yet not sure. Now I’ve begun using lavender oil on my scalp. Fingers crossed it works. Apart from this I’m doing well. Thank you again for sharing your beautiful photos xx

Losing our hair as women can be the most traumatizing. I agree that chemo was less intense than the hair loss. Congratulations on finishing chemo! That is a huge milestone. I wish you healing and peace as you begin life after active treatment.

I was diagnosed with stage 3b ovarian cancer and stage 1 uterine cancer. I completed my chemo in December of 2017 and I am ready for my hair to grow back. This was helpful because I have always had long natural curly hair. I have not embraced my bald head but have chosen to wear a wig (even my immediate family haven’t seen me bald). I was afraid of short hair and not knowing what to do with it but now I have some ideas. I was told last week I am cancer free but high risk for it to reoccur. Just living each day to the fullest and enjoying my family.

During chemo I pinned your website because you had the best documented pictures of post chemo hair! I kept coming back to your website during chemo to remind myself that it would eventually come back! Thanks for the great website.

I’m about 7 months post chemo. I’m so curious how you achieved a curl to your hair in your 6 and 7 month post chemo photos. I have naturally curly hair, but unfortunately my hair curls after it’s a couple inches out. I’m starting to get curls in random places on my head (at the base of my neck, behind my ears, etc.), but for the most part it’s just driving me nuts! Any tips on getting a cute curl would be greatly appreciated!

      Hey There,

My hair started to curl up naturally at about 5 months out. As it grew longer I struggled with the same thing you mentioned of it being more wavy and less formed curls. The first product I used a lot was this curl cream (http://bit.ly/2sFpCKe) and then I used a mini straightener and a mini curling iron to shape the curls. Check out my YouTube, I have a few tutorial of how I did it at that shorter length. Best wishes!

I am almost 2 months post chemo. My hair is growing out and as soon as it is warm enough I would love to shed my hats. However my brown hair is growing in as white, gray and black. I am trying to get used to it. Do you have any advice on how soon I could color it?

      Anna

I completely understand. I started dying mine at 5 months with non-amonia bleach and switched to normal dye at about 8 months.

I started my breast cancer journey in March of 2017. Finished surgeries, radiation and chemo in October 2017. Since then my hair is growing back, but strangely, to me. The colors are grey, white and brown. The right side is somewhat curly and the rest is straight. It’s longest in the back and shortest on the top. As spring and summer is coming I will stop wearing my scarfs, but still am struggling with how to style it. My hair was thick, straight and grew fast. However none of that seems to be true so far. I’m taking biotin. Your pictures and advice are very helpful. Thank you. I’m just grateful to still be here and curious how my hair will turn out.

Definitely gonna try the biotin gummed, found out about pomade before, and my hair looked Goofy in a headband. Currently, I am a year from my Feb 17 diagnosis, did chemo till mid June and have been NED since July! Root, Wooton! My started growing back in late August and even with frequent trims to keep looking fresh and neat I am sitting at about 3-4 inches all over crazy thick but it wants to curl or straight up when it’s not wet with tons of pomade. Any suggestions?

      Anna

It is tough at that stage. Have you tried wax? That can be used to tame the sides and then you could use curl cream on the top to create some definition.

I don’t want to cut my hair I just want it long again. I’m currently rocking a curly mullet afro. My last Chemo was Sept 2017. I feel like my hair is growing so slow. It’s still pretty thin in the front.

      Anna

      May 4, 2018Reply

That’s so natural I know many women who feel that way. It can also come back thinner or just be thinner at the beginning. Try to give it time and take biotin if your doctor approves. It really helped me.

I’m really struggling with my eye lashes (or lack of thereof), but it looks like biotin can help with that too! 🙂 Thank you and I hope you are doing well!

I am 16 months post chemo. So, so hard to go through this stage. I have “ helmet” hair right now. My hair is about three inches long and not growing as fast as it used to. I’m working with my hair dresser on this but I feel like I look “old”.

Anna – thank you for this beautiful post. I have just been diagnosed, and will admit that losing my hair is terrifying. [I have not yet started chemo.]

You are beautiful! Thank you for sharing what to expect and ideas for styling. I found this post very helpful! I’ve always had long hair, but I’ve been pinning pixie cut ideas throughout my treatment. I hated my wigs, so I’m thrilled to have any hair at this point. Currently I’m rocking a buzz cut, but I’m looking forward to the “chemo curls.” I feel like it’s growing pretty quickly.

Thanks so much for sharing your journey with us as this process is new and scary all at the same time. I was diagnosed at 35 with breast cancer last year July 2018, had my bilateral mastectomy Sept 2018 and finished chemo March 2019. I am cancer free thank God and my hair is like yours at the 3 month mark. I embraced the bald and now the boy short hair, no problem, but I have found that the worst part for me is the new peach fuzz on my face. I read in other blogs that it’s common with others after chemo, some ladies called it their “blonde monkey face” which is pretty funny and terribly sad. My husband was the first to notice and then my 7 yr old daughter asked me if the chemo gave me a beard… yikes. Not cool. Did you have this and if so what did you do??

Hi Anna! Thank you for such an encouraging post to show there are lights at the end of the tunnel! I am currently in my last three sessions of chemo and should be done at the end of July 2019. I was diagnosed with lymphoma in October 2018 when I was pregnant with my first baby. I was lucky enough to not have to start chemo until I delivered in February. I didn’t completely shave my head in the beginning but rather have a buzz cut because the hair was losing too fast. However, I noticed some patchy spots on my head and the hair is more coarse now. I am contemplating if I should shave everything off once the treatment is done in July and start over or should I just leave my hair as is (now mine looks like what you have at 2 months in this post, but with 1/2 the volume and patchy)? By the way, congratulation on your pregnancy!

As others above have said, thank you for being brave enough to post this for those of us that are about to or already embarking on this breast cancer fight. I am praying that they caught mine early, had surgery on Friday and am now headed toward Chemo, my hair was to my waist, but I have been cutting it each week a little shorter. The doctor says since I am triple positive, they will go with radical aggressive treatment. So, I am going to go ahead and have it taken as short with style that they can without just shaving me bald. It is so uplifting to read everyone’s comments and not feel alone through this. Bless you.

Hi Anna, your post is the best out there on post chemo hair growth. Such great ideas for styling. I lost my hair in March from chemo for Leukemia, and it started growing back during my last few months of chemo (never thought it would grow back during chemo!). I’ve had two trims, but I struggle with “poofiness”. I don’t ever brush it and it still is poofy. The only thing I’ve found at this point that helps is a headband to hold my hair down. 🙂 I also struggle with the idea of trimming it (And what to trim) when I want to grow it out. Just seems counterproductive.

I totally get that. So glad you found my page. I found having a hair stylist that got my post chemo hair helped so much. She guided me on when and what to trim while still promoting growth

Hi Anna, thank you for your post. I finished my chemo early April 2020 and I have just completed my radiation. My hair is ever so slowly growing in, but my top has grown in much better than elsewhere. I hope that the rest will thicken up as it is very tight to my head at this point. I have started taking supplements related to hair growth as suggested by a naturopath. Lost a lot of my hair years ago to alopecia but that grew back faster than chemo loss has.

Too many people have no idea that scalp therapy shampoos for fast hair growth (of course with no sulfates, no parabens and no DEA) exist. Persons now may possess longer hair and experience more alternatives. Undoubtedly worth searching. Whether you’re thinking about alopecia, hair damage, preventing scalp disorders, hair growth, hair and scalp care in general, very similar thoughts apply. Generally, you have to steer clear of hair treatments and products that use chemicals like parabens, DEA and sulfates. What’s beneficial for your hair is healthy for your skin all the same. It goes without saying your content above is spot on for so many reasons. It avoids the usual errors and pitfalls so many fall into- using bad alternatives. Thank you!

My daughter lost half (yes, only half) of her hair from radiation to her brain for brain cancer. Not only is she dealing with trying to grow it back, but the original half is stick straight and the new stuff is curly. That adds a whole other level of challenge. I too am trying to grow mine back (I shaved mine with her) and am really struggling to be okay with each new length. Its nice that we can do this together, and some of your tips may help along 5he way. 5hanks for the post!

Hi, I love your blog. I finished my Herceptin just last April. My hair starting to grow back November of last year after my heavy chemo cocktail. But I notice that the top is so thin and fine. I tried taking Biotin and Vitamin E as well. There are days that my hair is falling when I comb it. Any other secret to keep it stronger. I was happy that the strands on the first growth was think, but it is falling off. I am using Johnsons baby Shampoo to protect my hair from strong chemicals. Was your hair growth the same the first 3-5months? Did it become thinker eventually? Thanks for your help.

I am already back to work. One thing about the pandemic was WFH. But we may be going back to the office in October and I do not want to wear a wig whole day. It might hamper the healthy growth of my hair.
    Kind Regards, Natty

Most people I talk to are not aware that fast hair growth shampoos (of course with no sulfates, no parabens or DEA) are even a thing. We all are now able to possess longer hair and attain more alternatives. Certainly worth checking out.

Whether you’re going over hair loss, hair damage, preventing scalp disorders, hair growth, hair health normally, similar thoughts come to mind.

As a rule of thumb, you have to stay away from hair treatments and products that contain chemicals such as parabens, DEA or sulfates.

What’s healthy for your hair is healthy for your skin also.

Obviously your content here hits the nail in the head for many reasons. It avoids the common mistakes and errors too many fall into: utilizing bad alternatives. Thank you so much!

My hair has already started to grow in quick since I finished the hard stuff in April. I’m wondering if I still have to wait the 6 months after I’m done the maintenance chemo (tdm1) before I can dye my hair or seeing my hair has been growing in since April if I didn’t have to wait. A friend recently sent me an article about short hair styles after chemo, which included your page and hundreds of interesting comments. I had several surgeries for uterine and endometrial cancer, a year of chemo then a month of radiation in 2017. My hair is still very thin and straight. Grows very slowly,, and I keep it short. I have been wearing several wigs since losing my hair. Is that why it is taking so long to grow back. I’m going to try the gummies. Is there a perm you could Recommend? I really loved hearing from everyone who commented. Reading their stories has given me new inspiration. I’m 71 but think beauty should always be timeless. Thanks for sharing.
